The Irish National Kite Surfing Championships will take place on Duncannon Beach in County Wexford this weekend from August 23 and 24, 2014. The Championships are hosted by the Irish Kite-Surfing Association and Hooked Kite-surfing and will take place during the fifth annual Hooked Kite Fest in Duncannon.
Kite-Surf instructor and organiser Niall Roche from Hooked Kitesurfing said there will be lots to enjoy plus lots to see at the competition and festival. “This is going to be another great weekend in Duncannon, we are delighted to be hosting the IKSA Championships again this year and we have lots of riders coming in from Europe and all over Ireland to take part in the men’s and women’s course racing competitions and also the junior freestyle event.
For anyone not familiar with Kite surfing, it involves attaching yourself to a kite and skimming at high speed across the water on a board. The Competitors will also hope to catch some big airs and perform spectacular stunts as they harness gusts of wind and this is always great fun to watch.”
“Kitesurfing has become one of the fastest growing water sports in Ireland, with a growing community of both young and old riders, it is the world’s fastest growing adventure sport. Here in Ireland our sunny season can be short but we get wind all year round, so you will see many kiters braving the Irish waters “off season” when the wind has picked up especially here in Duncannon, it is one of the best kite-surfing locations in the country for lots of reasons but mostly due to the constant south westerly prevailing winds.” Niall continued.
The Festival and Championships will offer spectators the opportunity to witness the very best junior, female and male riders from across Ireland and the globe as they compete over the weekend in the course racing events. Competitors showcase their spectacular skills with aerial tricks and gravity defying moves, a treat for all of that watch from Duncannon Beach.
The festival also offers a host of free family fun and entertainment including water zorbing, a volleyball competition, live music, face painting, a Kids Zone and much more. For a full programme of the festival and competition see http://www.visitwexford.ie
