47th Annual Strawberry Celebrations Take off in Wexford

The 47th annual Strawberry Festival gets underway in Enniscorthy, county Wexford this weekend and organiser’s are expecting record crowds to enjoy the summer fruits, live music and lots of free events in the sunny southeast.


Ryan Sheridan, Wallis Bird and Damian Dempsey will all take to the Main Stage in The Big Red Barn at the weekend and host of arts events, a Teddy Bears Picnic, a busking competition, a cowboy disco and lots more are all on offer throughout the festival.

Not forgetting the famed fruit there will be the crowing of the Strawberry Queen. Paolo Tullio will join Wexford chef Phelim Byrne for ‘A Taste of Wexford Strawberries’ where chefs and home-cooks compete to impress the Strawberry Queen as she awards the winners their Bord Bia and Wexford Strawberry Growers Trophies. A Farmers Market featuring a host of artisan producers will be on offer along with the awarding of the Strawberry Grower of the year.

Commenting on the festival, Strawberry Festival event controller Patricia Bird said, “This festival is a legacy in the Irish festival calendar and the 2014 line up is stellar, all ages are well catered to and we are particularly pleased this year with the huge level of interest from international visitors with large numbers travelling to Wexford to enjoy the Strawberry festival.”

A new element of the Strawberry Festival has also been added focusing on Wexford’s abundance of literary talent along with some visiting writers. Authors Carmel Harrington, Paul O’Brien, Mary McCauley, Andrew Hughes, US Author LynnMarie Hulsmann and many more will host workshops, talks, panel discussions and book launches at ‘Focal’ during the festival.
