2012 A Year of Festivals for Wexford
There is an exciting year in store across Wexford for festival goers in 2012. There are a huge number of fantastic festivals and events taking place starting with the All Ireland Winter Shore angling Championships on the 26th of January, if you’re into fishing this is definitely the place to be to pick up some hints and tips from some of Irelands and the UK’s top anglers.
At the end of the month in Bannow the Bluegrass Festival will take place so get your Stetsons and dancing boots and enjoy some great music in a great setting.
In February a commemorative sculpture of eight foot will be unveiled in the Faythe area of Wexford town commemorating the end of the 1911 lockout.
And the ENNISCORTHY 10K will take place on February 12 in Enniscorthy town; we hope you’re already in training mode for this great race.
In March the annual ST PATRICK’S DAY festivities will take place throughout Wexford. In New Ross the Drama Festival takes centre stage from the 9th to the 11th and an eight foot bronze statute commemoration legendary hurler Nickey Raggard will be unveiled in Wexford town on March 19.
The Hook Duathlon will also take place, another super sporting event to aim for.
In April the brand new Wexford Garden Trail will be unveiled and we are really looking forward to the beautiful landscapes of the county being showcased as a trail.
Also in April the WEXFORD WALKING FESTIVAL takes place,- Enjoy this three day festival of guided walks in stunning locations
THE ‘HOPE & DREAM 10’ – Will take place in Enniscorthy on April 1; this 10 mile race event to raise funds for two charities – Hope; a cancer centre support serving Co Wexford and beyond and Share a Dream foundation; a charity that makes the dreams of sick and terminally ill children come true.
And the MASERATI CLUB will visit Wexford it’s the Maserati Club’s 40th anniversary celebratory spring meeting takes place in Wexford from April 26 to 29. The rally will consist of over 50 of these stunning cars.
In May WexFest will take place over the bank holiday weekend A fun filled Music Festival takes place from May 4 to 7 in Wexford town.
THE MARITIME MATTERS MUSIC FESTIVAL – Takes place at Europe’s oldest working lighthouse, Hook Head. Featuring music, children’s games, boat building, rescue displays, history workshops and more from May 5 to 7.
The AIM’S CHORAL Festival also takes place from May 18 to 20 and the WOW Toastmasters Conference will take place where the Wexford Toastmasters will host the UK and Ireland Toastmasters Annual Conference with up to 500 delegates attending.
The fantastic three day Wexford Food and Wine Festival will take place from the 25 to 27 of May with a tasty schedule of mouth watering events for culinary enthusiasts, celebrating local produce, quality, diversity and wholesomeness.
In June the ALL IRELAND FARMERS MARKET Competition takes place in Enniscorthy on June 3, showcasing the very best of produce from across the country.
The STRAWBERRY FEST IN ENNISCORTHY – One of Ireland’s longest established festivals, takes over the town of Enniscorthy celebrating, strawberries, Music, Family fun and more. June 1 to 4.
THE 18TH BYRNE PERRY SUMMER SCHOOL – Takes place in Gorey from June 22 to 24 on the theme of ‘A Decade of Commemorations.
DUNCANNON FORT MILITARY RE-ENACTMENT – Annual military re-enactment on June 2 and 3 featuring WWI and WW2 battles, archery, medieval fair, vintage army vehicles, weaponry and more.
In Mid June come and celebrate WEXFORD DAY – You can explore the top visitor attractions of Wexford for free on Wexford Day- as local tourist sites throw their doors open to celebrate ‘Wexford Day’.
And finish off the month with the Wexford Strawberry Half Marathon on June 24.
In July there are a huge number of events on offer including the 4TH OF JULY CELEBRATION – A new Irish American Festival takes place in New Ross and The Hook, filled with entertainment, music, history and fun for all the family.
KILMORE QUAY SEAFOOD FESTIVAL – Celebrating the very best of seafood, Music, Street Theatre, Stalls and Exhibitions.
TRI795 SPRINT TRIATHLON – On the foothills of Mount Leinster near Bunclody a fantastically challenging event.
JFK DUNBRODY FESTIVAL – A varied festival featuring open air music, markets, arts and crafts takes place in New Ross. July 20 to 22
LEINSTER FLEADH – Takes place Enniscorthy July 13 to 15
ALL DAY ARTS FESTIVAL – Takes place in The Bullring in Wexford town and all day Arts Festival for all the family.
RIVERSIDE JUMP 2012 – A Rockabilly Festival on July 6 and 8 in Enniscorthy town celebrating 1950’s Rock N Roll.
At the end of July and running into August enjoy the amazing annual Art in the Open Festival which takes place throughout county Wexford with paint outs, exhibitions and much much more. The annual Eileen Aroon Festival also takes place in Bunclody and festival with something on offer for all the family.
In August the MARKET HOUSE FESTIVAL takes place in Gorey on the August Bank Holiday Weekend.
The family fun DUNCANNON SANDSCULPTING FESTIVAL – action packed festival with fun events on beautiful Duncannon beach, fantastic fireworks, beach party, magic and puppet shows, beach games, street theatre and awesome sand sculptures. August 10 to 12
WEXFORD KITE-SURFING FESTIVAL – A display of Ireland’s best kitesurfers showcasing the fastest growing sport in the world on Duncannon beach taking place on August 25
The GOREY INTERNATIONAL CRAFT AND DESIGN FESTIVAL takes place from August 2-12 featuring the Gorey International Craft and Design Showcase and the Made in Wexford 2012 exhibition. The streets will be filled with markets, food events, street concerts and children’s activities throughout the 11 day festival
KILRANE FESTIVAL –takes place in Rosslare Harbour
ENNISCORTHY STREET RHYTHMS DANCE FEST 2012 – A weekend of music and dance with some top international acts and workshops taking place from 17 to 19.
WHITECHURCH STEAM AND VINTAGE RALLY – Featuring unique vintage and classic cars, machinery and motors, an ideal day out for any motoring enthusiast near Hook Head. August 11 and 12
September 2012 kicks off with the PITCH N PUTT CHAMPIONSHIPS – The National Inter-County Pitch n Putt Championships takes place in Enniscorthy on September 8 & 9.
THE NATIONAL PLOUGHING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2012 – New Ross are hosting the 2012 National Ploughing Championships.
NEW ROSS PIANO FESTIVAL – The renowned New Ross Piano Festival features a weekend of classical concerts, free alfresco Jazz, piano sessions and master classes and not to be missed festival. 27 to 30 September
THE WEXFORD HARVEST FESTIVAL AND HORTICULTURAL SHOW – In Kilrane the Harvest Festival is ideal for gardeners who are passionate about growing and showing their home produced fruit, flowers and vegetables. The show includes novelty vegetables, floral art, a children’s section and arts and craft.
BLACKSTAIRS BLUES FESTIVAL – Is now in its 17th successful year, during this time it has grown year on year in both audience and Blues line up, now attracting recording artists from all over Europe, the UK, Canada, the U.S.A and of course homegrown Irish Bluesmen and women This festival takes place from September 14-16
And for October one of our favourite times of year in Wexford the brilliant annual WEXFORD FESTIVAL OPERA takes place from October 24 to November 4. This internationally unique festival is one of the most loved opera festivals in the world, specialising in the presentation of rarely performed Opera and superb fringe events.
WEXFORD FRINGE FESTIVAL the annual Fringe Festival in its 60th Year offers an eclectic alternative to the Opera with over 250 events including art exhibitions, historical walks, musicals, drama and much more.
GOREY HALLOWEEN FESTIVAL – Halloween weekend sees Gorey come to life with scary events on offer for all the family including Scary Story Telling, Fancy Dress, Markets, Pumpkin Carving and more.
HALLOWEEN AT THE HOOK – ‘Spooky’ Halloween at Hook Lighthouse with art workshops and family fun events throughout the weekend.
HALLOWEEN AT THE CASTLE – Enniscorthy Castle becomes a spooky ancient place for Halloween with a programme of events not for the faint hearted …
In November WEXWORLDS SCI-FI AND FANTASY FICTION FESTIVAL – Takes place from November 23 to 25 this festival offers entertainment and pause for thought, as a celebration of fiction of the fantastic takes place. A variety of events are on offer including artistic creativity for children, art exhibitions and more…
In December a fantastic CHRISTMAS IN WEXFORD initiative is underway for the entire – Food and craft markets and of course Santa Claus will be travelling throughout the county again in 2012.
